Eiropas-Parlaments-Strasbourg1The European Parliament plenary session opened with a minute’s silence for victims of the Nepal earthquake on 25 April and migrants drowned in the Mediterranean on 20 April. President Schulz conveyed Parliament’s deepest sympathy to their families and friends.

Schulz noted that the Nepal earthquake, the worst in 100 years, had left 4,000 dead, 6,500 injured and 100,000 children in need of humanitarian aid. Villages were flattened, roads and power lines destroyed, and food and water were running short, he added, praising international efforts to get help in fast.

The 800-1,000 people drowned in the latest Mediterranean migrant tragedy on 20 April were fleeing war, famine and poverty, stressed Schulz, regretting the lack of progress in Europe’s political debates on the issue.

Next, Schulz pointed out that in Indonesia, nine people face imminent execution, including one French citizen, two Australians five other foreigners and an Indonesian citizen. In autumn 2013 President Joko Widodo had lifted a moratorium on the death penalty, and thereafter refused requests for mercy, said Schulz; urging him to revoke the sentences and reinstate the moratorium, as a step towards abolition.
